The Garage Biennale beyond capacity

Highway to Hell, Pavilion 5 of 6 of the Garage Biennale 2008, curated by Guy Overfelt and Heather Sparks has been shut down by the City and County of San Francisco prior to its opening on the expectation of a massive scale event. Even though initial parlays with officials from the city and county of SF regarding the proper administration of this event, community turnout has been too great and the city's entertainment commission has gotten wind of it, refusing to sanction such activates as they exist in their current form, on grounds that that the city prohibits this type of event at such as scale, in such a location, under such circumstances.

As an experiment in delimiting the scope of social and cultural exhibitionary practice in domestic space, the garage biennale has always walked a fine line. The curatorial intentions of the artists involved were a direct response to the specificity of the gallery's location, and a challenge to the fuzzy boundaries that delineate categories of cultural engagement. However, this happening became manifest at such a scale through it's promotional aspects of media coverage and the event's website (www.highwaytohellsf.com), that it transgressed government policy in a way that became reprehensible to the City of San Francisco.

As one disappointed patron has said, "You know you're bad ass when MUNI hates you", and in the word's of AC/DC's Bon Scott, "It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll".
